This update comes in addition to the feature testing and collaboration with Truecaller that WhatsApp had previously initiated.

Recognizing the seriousness of the problem, WhatsApp has proactively enhanced its AI and ML systems to tackle the challenge of spam calls in India. By doing so, the platform intends to prevent spammers and telemarketers from exploiting its services for harassment and fraudulent activities. This proactive approach is crucial, considering the vast number of Indian users who rely on WhatsApp for communication and information sharing.

A spokesperson from WhatsApp, speaking to TechCrunch, emphasized the company’s commitment to user safety and protection, highlighting their ongoing efforts to provide safety tools such as Block & Report, user education, and awareness programs. Additionally, WhatsApp continuously works towards identifying and removing malicious entities from its platform. However, scammers constantly find new ways to deceive users, and the rise of international scam calls is one such method they have recently adopted.

Spam calls have become a pervasive issue in India, with users often receiving up to 17 unwanted calls per day. Consequently, it is imperative to address this problem effectively. WhatsApp claims that this latest back-end update will result in a 50% reduction in spam call instances. While the update may take some time to take full effect, users need not take any action from their end.

In recent months, there have been numerous reports of users receiving unsolicited WhatsApp calls and messages from international scammers, often disguised as job offers. This surge in spam calls has garnered attention from the Indian government, which has urged telecom providers like Jio to leverage AI in eliminating telemarketing calls.
