Controversial Trailer for Gran Turismo Film Takes Shots at Gamers

Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the official trailer for the upcoming racing film, Gran Turismo, which is loosely connected to the popular PlayStation video game franchise of the same name. The film is directed by Neil Blomkamp, known for his work on District 9, Chappie, and Elysium, and features a star-studded cast including David Harbour (Stranger Things), Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), Archie Madekwe (See), Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever), Geri Halliwell Horner (Spice World), and Djimon Hounsou (Never Back Down).

Although the trailer does show a group of gamers racing real cars, it also takes the opportunity to poke fun at them, as well as gamers in general, which may not be well received by fans of the Gran Turismo game series.

What’s the point of Gran Turismo?

The upcoming Gran Turismo film heavily integrates with the popular PlayStation Studios video game and is inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo player who used his gaming skills to win a series of Nissan competitions, ultimately leading to a career as a professional racecar driver.

As we continue to see the success of video game adaptations like the recent Super Mario Bros. movie, which has grossed over $1 billion at the box office, it will be interesting to see how Gran Turismo performs. Additionally, with the highly anticipated release of The Last of Us TV show on HBO Max, we may be entering a new phase of video game adaptations in film and television.

Gran Turismo is set to premiere in theaters worldwide in August, and for those who want to experience the film in the best quality, we recommend checking out our list of the best TVs and soundbars when it eventually makes its way to streaming and Blu-ray.
