Algeria Takes a Stand: Banning Barbie for Alleged Moral Impact

Algeria rejected the new Barbie movie, just three weeks after its release in the country. The Ministry of Culture has issued a directive to cinemas to immediately cease screening the Hollywood blockbuster. An official source, as reported by Reuters News, stated that the film was deemed incompatible with Algeria’s religious and cultural values due to its exploration of homosexuality.

Cities such as Algiers, Oran, and Constantine initially witnessed a high demand for the movie, with reports from 24H Algérie suggesting it was exceedingly popular, often sold out each day. However, it has now been officially banned on grounds of being “detrimental to moral values,” as reported by a private news source.

This film has also stirred controversy in other Arab nations, with Kuwait banning it recently to safeguard their “public ethics.” Notable actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in the film, which narrates Barbie’s journey of self-discovery during her formative years.

Director Greta Gerwig asserted that the movie was intended to be humorous and aimed to encourage societal progress beyond behaviors considered detrimental to both men and women.

Despite facing criticism in certain regions, countries such as the UK and Spain have embraced Barbie’s new adventure. Even British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Spanish royal family attended screenings. Since its release, the movie has garnered over $1 billion in global revenue.
