Paramount+ Announces Cancellation and Removal of Four Shows from Streaming Service
|Revised post: “Attention, viewers! If you plan to watch certain shows on Paramount+, you might want to reconsider. Paramount+ has recently announced the cancellation and removal of four original shows from its streaming service. This move is part of Paramount Global’s strategy to utilize the removals as a tax write-off.
The affected shows include Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Queen of the Universe, The Game, and Star Trek: Prodigy, all of which will be leaving the platform next week. The decision to cancel Prodigy is shocking considering Paramount’s renewal of the series for a second season in late 2021.
A spokesperson from Paramount+ explained that the streamer is “refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers” as it prepares for the upcoming merger with Showtime on June 27. According to The Hollywood Reporter, more content removals are expected in the following weeks, making these four shows the most notable casualties so far.
While Paramount can provide its own explanation for this decision, it’s clear that this move mirrors similar actions taken by Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney in the past. Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery removed numerous shows and movies, some of which found their way to FAST services like Tubi. Similarly, Disney later released several TV shows from Hulu and Disney+, resulting in a $1.5 billion write-down during the fiscal third quarter.
It appears that the streaming landscape continues to evolve, with platforms making strategic adjustments to their content offerings. As viewers, we can only hope that these changes ultimately lead to an enhanced streaming experience for all.”
Exciting news awaits as Paramount+ and Showtime join forces this Tuesday, combining the vast Showtime library with Paramount’s streaming service. However, along with this integration comes a price adjustment for subscribers. The new subscription plans will be $5.99 for Paramount+ without Showtime and $11.99 for Paramount+ with Showtime. It’s a bold move to ask customers to pay more while simultaneously removing shows they may have cherished. Only time will tell if this strategic decision proves to be the right one in the months ahead. Stay tuned for updates as the streaming landscape continues to evolve.
