Threads Experiences Sharp Decline: Daily Active Users Halved Just One Week After Launch

Threads, Instagram’s latest rival to Twitter, has had an astounding launch week, surpassing an impressive milestone of 100 million users. It has quickly emerged as the fastest-growing app in history.

Threads, Instagram’s promising contender against Twitter, experienced a remarkable launch week with over 100 million users, making it the fastest-growing app ever. However, as with most hyped products, the initial excitement seems to have settled down. According to a recent report by SimilarWeb, Threads’ daily active users have declined significantly since its peak.

During its best day, July 7, Threads boasted more than 49 million daily active users on Android worldwide, accounting for about 45% of Twitter’s usage with over 109 million active Android users that day. However, by Friday, July 14, Threads’ active users had dropped to 23.6 million, representing only about 22% of Twitter’s audience.

In the United States, where Threads saw the most activity, engagement peaked at around 21 minutes per user on July 7. By July 14, that figure plummeted to just over 6 minutes. Furthermore, during Threads’ initial two days of general availability, web traffic to twitter.com decreased by 5% compared to the previous week. Although traffic eventually rebounded, the latest 7-day data still showed an 11% year-over-year decrease.

While some saw Threads as a potential “Twitter killer,” it still has a long way to go to achieve such status. Despite its strong start, Threads currently only accounts for about a fifth of Twitter’s size and daily active user count.

In addition to facing declining user numbers, Threads is grappling with issues similar to those experienced by Twitter, such as spam accounts. To address these challenges, the company plans to implement more stringent rate limits, a decision announced by Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head. However, they will aim to avoid the pitfalls experienced by Twitter when it rushed Thread’s early release due to rate limit issues.

In summary, Threads’ launch generated considerable buzz, but it now faces the reality of sustaining its user base and overcoming obstacles to achieve long-term success.

Indeed, Threads has undoubtedly made a splash with its record-breaking launch in the realm of social media apps. However, maintaining such rapid growth and competing against formidable rivals will be the real test for its longevity and success. As the hype settles and the initial excitement subsides, Threads must continue to evolve, adapt, and provide unique value to its users.

With the competition in the social media landscape becoming increasingly fierce, Threads will have to stay ahead of the curve, continually introducing innovative features and addressing user concerns. As user preferences change and new platforms emerge, Threads must remain agile and responsive to the evolving trends to retain its user base and attract new users.

Only time will tell how Threads fares in this competitive environment, but its initial surge indicates it has the potential to make a significant impact. The future holds the key to whether Threads can maintain its remarkable growth and solidify its position among the giants of social media. We’ll be eagerly watching to see how this exciting journey unfolds!
