Blizzard is creating a mobile version of “Warcraft” that is similar to Pokemon Go
|Jason Schreier of Kotaku revealed the joyful news that Warcraft would be given the Pokemon Go treatment as part of a lengthy article on the future of the Diablo franchise and the overall health of the game’s creator, Blizzard.
Providing some background Diablo Immortal, a mobile adaptation of the Diablo franchise, is being created by Blizzard, the company revealed earlier in November during its annual BlizzCon convention. The introduction of a scaled-down mobile version was saved for the big surprise at the conclusion of the presentation, much to the chagrin of the series’ fans, who were extremely disappointed that Blizzard had no significant updates on the next major entry in the franchise (a PC or console game).
Yet, Blizzard has seen enough success on mobile (most notably with the digital card game Hearthstone) that the corporation won’t abandon the platform as a result of one misguided revelation. However, Diablo Immortal is only one of a number of mobile games that are currently under development, including, according to sources, “a Warcraft equivalent of Pokemon Go.”
Several Blizzard fans are reportedly avid gamers and enthusiasts of mobile games.
As the statue of an orc in the center of the Blizzard campus serves as a Pokemon Go gym, “one of Blizzard’s incubation teams developed a Warcraft version of Pokémon Go, which is under development for smartphones right now,” according to the report.
The game is currently being developed because lead designer Cory Stockton, who previously worked on World of Warcraft, is a huge Pokémon fan, according to Schreier. “It’s safe to say that the decision-makers at Blizzard were aware that this Warcraft spinoff could be a huge revenue generator, though,” she adds.
The Warcraft mobile game, according to those who have played it, has a lot more content than Pokémon Go, including single-player elements.
It’s unclear when or if this game will ever be released (after all, the same source reveals that Diablo 3’s second expansion was shelved despite the popularity of the original game).
Yet given the popularity of Hearthstone, there’s no question that Blizzard would create a Pokemon Go-like game.
